ABOUT DONETSK

 

 

 

Donetsk Region is one of the major regions of Ukraine. It is located in the south-east of the country. It borders on Russian Federation in the east. In the south it has access to the Mediterranean waters. Its longitude from north to south is 270 km, from east to west – 190 km. The area of the region comprises about 4% of the total area of the country. Population of the region is approximately 4.8 million. Administratively, Donetsk is a center of Donetsk Region with a population of approximately one million inhabitants. In the administrative-territorial system of the region there are 52 cities( 28 of them are of the region importance), 17 rural areas, 81township counsils, 131 urban-type communities, 253village councils, 246 settlements and 878 villages.

Donetsk Region is one of the most prosperous regions of Ukraine with a big industrial potential and expanding economy. This is the most economic active region. Approximately 25% of industrial production of the country is concentrated in this region. Donbass has well-developed industrial basis, which is the main factor of economic activity in the region. Key industries of Donbass are coal-mining and metallurgical industry, machine-building and food industry.

History
Zaporozhye Cossacks and Don Cossacks were the first who began to settle the territory near Donetsk in 17 century. In1869 John Yuz began to build metallurgical plant with a little work settlement Yuzovka. The year of appearance of the settlement is considered to be a year of the foundation of Donetsk In 1917 the settlement Yuzovka was given a status of a city. In 1932 the city became a center of Donetsk region. In 1970 UNESCO designated Donetsk as the best industrial city in the world.

Infrastructure
Donetsk region has a well-developed infrastructure. Roads connect Donetsk with other regions of Ukraine and the south of Russia. Motorways correspond to European standards, a net of petrol stations is well-developed, representative of the chief car producers give technical service. The railway system is modern and effective. Donetsk has a developed system of tram, trolley bus and bus routes. Three airports ( in Mariupol, Donetsk and Kramatorsk) connect region with the whole world. The airport in Donetsk has an international status and gives all kinds of customs service.

A sea port in Mariupol is the most important export-import center of the region. Having access to motorways and railways, the port provides local industry with a developed communication system, all kinds of customs and freight service.

Donetsk develops and builds dynamic. An active reconstruction and improvements of districts and a center part of the city is constantly continuing.

Economy
Industrial potential of the region makes basis for economic complex of the region and plays an important part in the Ukrainian economy. The region has one fifth of the key industrial funds of the country, supplies more than 20 % of the national sales volume of industrial production and plays an important part in output of industrial and agricultural production.

Existence of its own fuel-energy and mineral and raw material resources, proximity of iron-ore deposits of Krivorozhsky basin, access to the sea caused a formation of big industrial complex with a high concentration of heavy industry branches, establishment of a well-developed production, scientific and social infrastructure.

The main trade partners are Russian Federation, Turkey, Italy, Germany, the USA, Poland, France, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Belarus, British Isles, Syria, UAE.

Education
A level of education in Ukraine is high enough. Donetsk is one of the biggest centers of high education in the country. There are more than 100 universities. Every year approximately 40 000 students graduates from the universities. Culture
Donetsk region is constantly changing its image, it turns from the land of pit refuse heaps and a big anthropogenic loading into one of the largest cultural and spirit centers of Ukraine. In the region there is a developed net of educational establishments which satisfy a demand of the population in forms, profiles and languages of education. There are 5 theaters. One of them is the Donetsk State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet named after A.Solovyanenko which is well-known in the country and abroad. Artistic festivals also enjoy wide popularity: “ Stars of World Ballet”, “Prokofevskaya Vesna”.

In the region there are many beautiful places and healing springs. Salt lakes and mineral sources in Slavyansk are of balneological importance. Salt mine in the town Soledar where a speleological sanatorium is built has unique medical properties. Azov coast is unsurpassed by its health effect. A national natural park “ Svyatye Gory” (Sacred Mountain), botanical miracle -Khomutovskaya steppe, preservation Kamennye Mogily (stone tombs), lakes in Slavyansk of kastoric origin, Krasnolemansky forest with a unique climate.

Donetsk Region is an attractive place for travelling. In Donetsk there are a lot of places for entertainment and rest. One can see sights of the city and spend time in one of the entertainment centers of Donetsk. For business tourists Donetsk offers service connected with an organization of conferences, forums, seminars, business meetings, trainings.

Sport
Stadiums, sports grounds and fields, swimming-pools, palaces of sport, track and fields maneges, gyms, skating-ranks, ice palace- all these - are at people’s service. All kinds of sport, especially football develop actively in our city. A pride of Donetsk is “ Donbass-arena”: it is a 5 stars elite class stadium-theater which is characterized by its grandeur and uniqueness and it is considered to be one of the best sport fields and cultural centers of Europe. This building is unsurpassed and original and it is considered to be the first object like this in Eastern Europe.

Many times gyms of different countries applauded our athletes and boxers, football players, runners, gymnasts, and basketball players. Names of Sergey Bubka, Liliya Podkopaeva, Polina Astakhova, Vladimir Pokotilov, Ruslan Ponomarev, Nina Zoskova, Ilya Mate, Nadezhda Tkachenko, Vyacheslav Oleynik and other sportsmen are well-known in the whole world. So it should.

 

 

 

 

 

Donetsk region is created on the 2^nd of July 1932.There are 52 towns: 28 towns and 17 districts of oblast importance, 81 village councils, 131 settlements, 253 settlement councils, 246 settlements and 878 villages in the administrative territorial structure.

 There are marvelous places and healing fields in oblast. Slovjansk salt lakes and springs of mineral waters have balneological importance. Unique natural healthful characteristics exist in salt mine in Soledari Town, where speleteological health resort is created.  Very effective for health is the Azov Seaside. Special scientific and ecological values form protected areas – Svyatohir’ya and Polovets’ Steppe.

 

The oblast is rich for its generous black earth.It has a rich mineral and raw material base. The main mineral resources are the following: stone coal (reserves are 18.3 milliards tones), rock salt, limestones, potassium salt, mercury, asbestos, and graphite – almost 50 kinds.

 

 

 

The region industrial potential forms the basis for economical complex and plays an important role in the Economy of Ukraine. Donetsk region has almost the fifth part of the major industrial and production funds of Ukraine,   provides almost 20 % of the national amount of the implemented industrial production, and takes the first and the leading places for the main industrial and house kinds of production in Ukraine.

Coal industry is presented by 111 mines and mine administrations, 23 small enterprises of private forms of property and 27 functional concentrating factories. A production facility of the coal extracting enterprises includes 56 million tones of coal per year. Balance industrial coal stocks are equal to 14 milliards t. In order to fulfill the measures of the restructuring program of the region coal branch the shutting process of unpromising mines is made. On the first of May 2007 55 mines and 2 concentrating factories are in the shutting phase.Electric power engineering is presented by the one complex of generating, networking, repair-technical productions. Fixed power of the 6 heat electric power stations (9.0 thousands. megawatt) is able to completely satisfy regional needs and provide other regions with electric power. 11 metallurgical enterprises, 39 enterprises that produce  ready-made metal goods and pipe  factory in metallurgical complex. This complex includes 7 coke-chemical, 3 flux-extracting and 13 fireproof enterprises.

 

The main range of metallurgical production: recycling and foundry cast iron, operating lease of the different profiles, pipes, steel cables, etc.There concentrated enterprises of nonferrous metallurgy important for the economical complex of Ukraine in the region. This branch includes 9 enterprises that work with the help of secondary raw materials.Specific gravity of export metallurgical production in the region general export amount forms 76 %.In the chemical and oil chemical industries work 36 enterprises of the different specializations. They produce mineral manures, ammonia, polystyrene, acid, production for military-industrial complex, household chemical goods, pharmaceutical production, etc.Almost 55 % of the chemical production is exported.

 

Machine-building complex is presented by 150 enterprises. They fully satisfy the needs of the country concerning shaft-sinking and tunnelling equipment, produce almost 100% of the national amount of household refrigerators, 74% – washing machines.Food and recycling industry includes 122 large enterprises, which are specialized in meat, milk, bakery, meal-grinded and peeled grains, confectionery, macaroni, oil, fish, vegetable, liqueur-vodka, wine, bear-alcohol-free production.

 

Production of not foodstuffs for the population in the region is made by the industrial enterprises that produce furniture, refrigerators, gas ovens, washing machines, plates and dishes, textile, sewing and knitted goods, footwear and others.
